Most people in the vicinity of Ekiti State University went about their daily activities today unaware of the disaster that had happened all through the night.
A popular food/business centre popularly referred to as “CJ” was razed by fire over night. The cause of the incident is still unknown. Security operatives have closed the affected area to ward-off people from the site.
A major part of the area was destroyed by the fire as most of the structures were made of wood. We gathered that there was no one around to put out the fire. As at the time of this report, there is still no provision in place to handle such incidents. Although, there no loss of life was recorded, valuables were razed in the fire. Reports reaching GleamGlean indicate that final year projects were also destroyed.
The student union of Ekiti State University has written an open letter to the university authorities over the incident. The body asked the school authority to intervene and provide lasting alternatives for those affected by the frequent fires. They also pleaded for the intervention of the state government in providing relevant infrastructure. In addition to this, the SUG appealed to the university management to extend the deadline of project submission to allow for all finalists who lost theirs in the fire.
Students are eager to know what actions the university management will take regarding the incident.
